Azithromycin is a broad-spectrum antibiotic belonging to the macrolide class. It is commonly prescribed in animals to treat a wide range of bacterial infections.

It is often used to manage infections caused by tick-borne organisms (Rickettsia), Bartonella (cat-scratch fever), Brucella, Lyme disease, and certain Mycoplasma species. In foals, it can also be used to treat Rhodococcus infections.

Additionally, azithromycin may offer immune-modulating effects and is sometimes considered in the treatment of viral papillomatosis or gingival hyperplasia associated with cyclosporine use in dogs.
